What is Reflexology ?
Reflexology is a therapy which has been used for thousands of years. By the ancient Egyptians, in the tomb of Ankhmahor a physician found in 1897, thought to date back to 2330BC pictures were painted on the wall of one person massaging or manipulating another person's foot in another picture a hand massage is taking place.
For over 5000 years the Chinese have been using the application of pressure to heal, with the use of acupressure and acupuncture.
Reflexology is a therapy which helps to restore and maintain balance within the whole body by applying pressure to parts of the feet known as reflex areas. The feet and the hands are mini maps of the body's anatomy so all body systems can be accessed by applying pressure or massaging the corresponding area of the foot or hand.
The aim is to stimulate the body's own healing process and bring the body back into balance. It encourages the body to rebuild its energy, stimulate circulation and help the nervous system to work more efficiently.
How does it work ?
Reflexology works on the principle of the whole body being connected from head to toe represented by ten longitudinal zones running front to back, head to toe throughout the body and are easily accessed via the feet.
Through applied pressure or manipulation to a specific area on the foot all of the organs in that zone will benefit. Each part of the foot is a different reflex area which connects to a specific part of the body.
When receiving a reflexology treatment the therapist will use their thumbs and fingers to apply pressure to these reflex areas and will note tender reflexes and crystal deposits (a granular texture under the surface of the skin) on a reflex, which may be a sign of imbalance in the corresponding part of the body and work on these areas to restore balance and health.
How can it help ?
A 60 minute treatment of reflexology can help relieve stress, tension and will help release trapped nervous energy, with approximately 7000 nerves are stimulated by this therapy. It is a deeply relaxing yet stimulating experience, thus leaving you feeling calm but with more energy.
Conditions which can benefit from a reflexology treatment are IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), headaches, coughs, colds, asthma, indigestion, insomnia, muscle tension, eczema, psoriasis, stiff joints, anxiety and many others.
